The 411 on Title Tags Part II: How To Effectively Utilize Title Tags

Last time, I discussed about the importance (or lack thereof) of title tags to on-site search engine optimization. This second part of the topic is specifically aimed at those who are sold on the idea of title tags being a prime SEO factor. So, how do you capitalize on title tags’ ability to boost your rankings in the SERPs? Here are some guidelines to give you a general idea

How To Effectively Utilize Title Tags

1. Put a relevant keyword into the tag. Prior to this, if you are serious in getting your web site high up in the rankings, you need to do intensive keyword research for your niche. What you put in your title tag should be highly relevant and frequently queried to increase your chances of getting found by prospective visitors. Remember to put the goods and services you offer so visitors would know what your web site is about from the get-go.

2. Put your company name into the tag. I said it in the first part. The Big G displays the first 60-90 characters of your tag so take advantage of it and promote your brand. Whether to place the brand or the keyword first is entirely up to you. There are those who believe however, the placing the keywords at the beginning of the tag makes it more potent.

3. Keywords used should also appear on that page’s content.

Title Tag No-Nos

1. Do not use duplicate title tags for multiple pages. That’s a BIG no-no. Since you rely on keywords to get your pages indexed, the Google search engine spider might tag your pages as duplicate content and off to the supplementals you go.

2. Do not repeat words within the title tag. Don’t be redundant and use a word only once inside the title tag.
