Meta tags are our friends!
To begin, META tags are another tag in HTML, but by no means are
they required. Basicly, they are used to help search spiders, or
web crawlers index your site better in search engines, and other
places on the internet, without having to search very hard for
the information. META tags give information about your site to
the search engines, so that when your site is indexed in the
engine it is listed with the information that you want it to
list with. If you do not include META tags on your site, than
your site will still be indexed, but will include some text on
the webpage that is indexed. Every search engine works
differently, and if you are interested in how each one works,
may be a good idea to do some searching around for that. Also,
remember that not all search engines use Meta tags.
What Do META Tags Look Like? Although there are different
formats to META tags, there are a couple that are mostly used.
META tags are always included in the
tag, normally after
the
tag. Also, note that you do not have to close the
<META> tag.</p>
<p><META name="description" content="describe your page here"> This
is the description of your webpage that the spider reads. Along
with the title of the page and the next meta tag, search spiders
will index your website. </p>
<p><META name="keywords" content="here, you, can, list your,
keywords"> List the keywords that you would like your site to be
related to. It's also a very good idea to use keywords that
actually have something to do with your site, as it does not
help your search rank to have keywords that have no relation to
your site. </p>
<p>Other Notes - The META tags only need to be stated on one of
your pages, in most cases having them on the index.html, or the
main page of your website is fine. - In the description tag, try
your best to describe your site as best you can without writing
a book :). - Wherever a <HEAD> tag is used, you can use META
tags, this includes PHP, and ASP documents. - Note that there
are other forms of META tags, and you can make it your duty to
find them. </p>
